Welcome to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
Joe Jonas’s new band DNCE has a new single, “Body Moves,” which brother Nick is promoting with a video of himself dancing to the song on a balcony while smoking a cigar. I’m not sure what about this is positive press, unless of course you’re going by the idea all press is good press.
The CW is looking to take on a new project by rebooting “Dynasty” with the same team that brought us “Gossip Girl” many moons ago. The series would be updated to modern day, so less big hair than the original eighties’ show, but one thing stays the same: it doesn’t matter how rich, how pretty, or how white you are — you still have a ton of problems.
The 1975 performed on BBC Radio 1 with a full orchestra and included a cover of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” in their set. No, that wasn’t just a grown-up, sad version of your favorite British boy band up there, and if it was, then Harry’s certainly let his hair get ever more wild.
Pretty much all of the news on the TV front is about the new Netflix series “Luke Cage” this week after all thirteen episodes were released at once and then the Internet started to boom covering the latest super hero favorite. This, ABC, is why this Marvel series is doing better than yours. People have become impatient and can only appreciate things when they’re all handed to them at once.
On a radio show this week, Britney Spears reacted to Ariana Grande’s impression of her on a March edition of “Saturday Night Live.” While Spears thought the impression was funny, she always said that she’s heard better and prefers Ariana’s real voice. I guess she doesn’t understand that Grande’s real voice pretty much just is a bad rip-off of other pop stars.
But, on the positive ABC side, they have decided to order full seasons for Kiefer Sutherland’s show “Designated Survivor,” as well as “Speechless.” I guess that shows that Americans are interested what would happen if we were to start over with all new representatives in our government and are still insensitive enough to laugh at a handicapped kid.
As we’ve reported before, Lady Gaga is coming out with a new album this season, and to celebrate its release, she is planning on blasting the new tracks in a number of dive bars across the country to return to her roots of playing smaller venues. This is what her press team decided to market it as after Madison Square Garden told her they’d rather rent the venue to Billy Joel for ten shows in a row (what’s his record up to now, anyway?).
In more concert news, Kanye West returned to our area this past weekend for The Meadows music festival where he showed up thirty minutes late and then cut the performance twenty minutes short following a “family emergency.” I hope all is well with Kanye, but seriously, if he just wanted a night in with Kim he should’ve said so — would’ve finally made him look human.
And finally, “Saturday Night Live” returned on NBC where the opening monologue appropriately spoofed on the presidential debate from the past week. Many were commenting that they thought Alex Baldwin should take over for Donald Trump during the next debate this Sunday, which is really saying something if it’s better for a man who calls his daughter and bullies her to be president than a man who just wants to sleep with his daughter.
