Hump Day Update: 06/29/2016

By Rachel A. G. Gilman, Staff Writer

Welcome to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.

Rapper Wiz Khalifa went on the radio this week in Pittsburgh and revealed that he and Kanye West are not as cool as Kanye has implied they are, following a Twitter spat in January. Apparently Kanye’s apology was lackluster, but let’s be honest: does Kanye really care about what anyone else thinks of him? Kanye’s love for Kanye is enough to keep him going.

The biggest news in TV this week was probably the “Games of Thrones” season finale. Now, I don’t want to give any spoilers, but coming from someone who has never watched the show, I think it’s a pretty safe bet to say there was at least one long journey, two intense sex scenes, and three characters you had just learned the names of who were killed off.

Chris Martin of Coldplay praised Rihanna this week, positively comparing Rihanna’s voice to a “tube of toothpaste.” Hey, give Chris Martin a break – if he’s still doing that whole fasting once a week thing, he may’ve just been in need of a snack in order to think of a better metaphor.

We were teased with yet another shot from the “Gilmore Girls” upcoming Netflix series this week where Rory Gilmore is shown sharing books and Pop-Tarts with Michelle Obama. We’ve already seen Rory hanging out at Luke’s with her mom and apparently teaching classes back at her old high school, so either there is more than one Rory or we’ll learn she’s become a superhero and really can do it all.

For all of you hoping that One Direction would be reuniting soon, you may want to guess again as the boys head in their separate directions and start solo projects. Niall Horan was first, and now Harry Styles is next with a new record deal with Columbia. Well, whatever the guys produce, they just better come along with more cheesy music videos.

Michael Strahan has comfortably settled into his new role at “Good Morning America” and was asked if he missed his old morning job, which he apparently does not because it’s nice to have a break. I mean, the big increase in his paycheck probably doesn’t hurt things, either.

For all of you who are too cheap to purchase music, you can rejoice that Adele’s “25” is now on Spotify for your perusing. Proceed by adding some teary-eyed tracks to your “SUMMER 2k16” playlists.

In case you were worried about the fate of “Nashville,” it was recently picked up for a fifth season on CMT after ABC decided to pass on the show. However, two of the show’s biggest stars, Will Chase and Aubrey Peeples, have announced they will parting ways with the show, and others have voiced concern about continuing to work in Tennessee after anti-LGBT legislation was passed in the state. Just another time bigotry is ruining our favorite things.

And finally, the BET awards were this past weekend, which were very politically charged and also filled with tributes to Prince and Muhammad Ali. However, one of the most noteworthy things is that Beyoncé opened the show with a rendition of her song “Freedom,” where she and her backup dancers danced in heels in a shallow pool of water without slipping. If that doesn’t prove she’s Queen B, what will?

Hope you enjoyed this week! See you back here next Wednesday. Stay cool, NYU!
