Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
If you’ve been watching “The Bachelor” instead of the Olympics, you’ve probably had more excitement. This week, Kendall brought Arie on a date in her hometown to show her favorite hobby of performing taxidermy on animals. At least he knows how their family pets would be memorialized.
5 Seconds of Summer (that boy band that looked like One Direction was experiencing an emo phase) is trying to plan a comeback with teasers saying they have some “tasty new jams” on the horizon. Personally, I hope this means they will actually be providing some raspberry preserves and marmalade for moms of fans because those concerts can get exhausting without a snack.
Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” will be returning for a fifteenth season in the coming future, though I’m not sure why we keep watching. We all know by this point that your average American can’t dance unless they’ve had at least two glasses of wine in them.
Drake has released another new music video, this time for the song “God’s Plan” where the rapper is embracing the spirit of believing it’s better to give than to receive. He gave out almost a million dollars to the greater Miami community by paying for people’s grocery bills, giving back to college students, and supporting a local women’s shelter. If you were tired of hearing about what a great guy is from your friend who has a massive crush on him, I think you might have to agree with them this time around.
Oprah is now a correspondent on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” and kicked off the big gig with a focus group of politically divided Americans that she reunited to see if they could come to some common ground over the last five months. I feel like she could give them all cars or trips to Australia and they’d be right as rain.
Ed Sheeran announced that his next album will be straying away from the pop music universe because he thinks it’s too risky to try and make another hit in that genre. Don’t get terrified yet, though, folks, because he says he’s taking inspiration from Coldplay, and I wouldn’t exactly call them hard rockers (though their rainbow outfits and piano ballads are certainly a tough exterior).
Joel McHale revealed this week that his old “E!” series “The Soup” had to stop making jokes at the expense of the Kardashian family after Kris Jenner complained. I mean, I get the frustration at your creative limitations, Joel, but watching that family get hair extensions and discuss every life decision four times over is what paid your salary there, so…
Selena Gomez was on BBC 1 Radio this week and played a game of “Remember the Lyrics” where she was asked to recall words from duets she’s done with BFF Demi Lovato and ex-BF Zedd. She couldn’t, but she did remember the words to her old duet with Barney. Let’s think about what that says about the quality of lyrics from the songwriters at Disney.
And finally, in TV and music news coming together with sports, Fergie sang the national anthem at the NBA All-Star game this past weekend and made some interesting arrangement choices, leading to a slew of social media pushback. I guess The Duchess didn’t get the memo that some things are not meant to be made more glamorous.
